Umbertide, located 35 km from Perugia and 200 km from Rome, lies in a valley surrounded by green hills overshadowed by the peak of Mount Acuto. The Tiber runs along the wall of the old city. Coming from Città di Castello or Lake Trasimeno, you will come to the Montalto Castle, the ancient city defense at Niccone. The historical center extends from the ancient wall of the castle to Piazza St. Francis (lower city). There are three ancient churches on the piazza and the convent of St. Francis which today is the communal library and cultural center. From here one can go to Piazza Matteotti, the political-administrative heart of Umbertide with the Commune Palace, an entirely remodelled XVIII building. Piazza Mazzini provides one of the best views of the city. To the left is the majestic structure of the fortress that overlooks Piazza Fortebracci and the remodelled Riuniti Theater and the Collegiate at the bottom with its impressile octagonal mausoleum.
If arriving from Perugia or Gubbio, the entrance is completely different. Passing by the industrial zone, one sees the new city with its wide strects, modern commercial center and modern sports complex. Overlooking the area is the Park and Ranieri Pine Woods that are the green lungs of Umbertide.
