The Trentino-Alto Adige-South Tyrol is Italy's most northern region. Its territory is entirely mountainous as well as being noteworthy for a large number of valleys. The Trentino-Alto Adige-South Tyrol includes, in the mountains, the whole of the hydrographic basin of the Adige river, from its source at the Lessini Montains; the northern part is the Alto Adige region whereas the area of stretta di Salorno belongs to the Trentino region. Ortles and Mount Cevedale are the highest mountains even though many others exceed a height of three thousand metres. The Trentino-Alto Adige-South Tyrol, to which belongs the uppermost extremity of Lake Garda, is rich in mountain lakes: the Tovel, the Ledro and the Carezza, as well as others. The whole of the Trentino-Alto Adige-South Tyrol is crossed by the river Adige, the second longest in Italy and which has numerous tributaries.
It is one of the five regions with a special Statute, giving full autonomy to the provinces of Trento and Bolzano. There are different dialects to which equal rights are recognised and the German language is considered equal to Italian, as is also the case for the Ladino language which is spoken in some areas. The economy of the Trentino-Alto Adige-South Tyrol is varied: agriculture for the production of apples, timber for processing and rye. Wine production is also important and produces some excellent quality wines. Industry has developed thanks to the abundance of hydro-electric power, in particular in the sectors of the iron and steel industry, mechanics, metals, food production, chemicals and building materials.
In Trentino-Alto Adige-South Tyrol tourism here is lively both in the summer and in the winter, with a leading role for the region which is able to offer a vast range of choice between: hotels, farm holiday, farmhouse, residence self-catering accommodation, mountain chalets, typical garn, b&b, rooms for rent, holiday homes, camp sites and tourist villages.
