The Sella Group is as an enormous, compact, square block with sheer rock faces that rises up to 2950 m in the Dolomite mass of Sass Pordoi to the north-east. The rocky mass is delineated by four well known Dolomite passes located at the four cardinal points: Passo Gardena to the north, Passo Campolongo to the east, Passo Pordoi to the south and Passo Sella to the west. This last pass lies 12 km from Canazei on a lush, grassy saddle that separates the Sassolungo and Sella groups. It is dominated by the beautiful grouping of the Torri del Sella and the long coralline barrier of the Msules. The fossil-rich Sella group has Piz Bo as its highest point at 3152 m and represents one of the most spectacular natural balconies over the Dolomites and the whole Alpine range.
Sassolungo - The Sella Pass separates the Sella massif from the coral atoll of the Sassolungo, which impressively raises from the Alpe di Siusi, between the Jouf of Fassa and the Val Gardena. Its gorges, walls and needles are absolutely beautiful. The part of the Sassolungo massif facing the Val di Fassa goes from "Punta Grohmann" to the eastern peak of "Sassopiatto", including "Torre Innerkofler" and the "Dente". The Sassolungo massif, with its majestic bulk, offers impressive views.
The Catinaccio (3003 m), called "Rosengarten" (rose garden) in German, refers to the legend of king Laurino and his dwarves that explains the characteristic phenomenon of light refraction at sunset. The mountain is a huge coralline cliff of great mountaineering and landscape interest, given the numerous opportunities for ascents and traverses. The most southern part of the Catinaccio group belongs to the Val di Fassa, or rather the area of Val. The spectacular Torri del Vajolet, better known as Catinaccio dell'Antermoia-Larsec, belong to the eastern complex. The Gardeccia basin at 1950 m., together with Ciampedi, is the preferred departure point for all mountaineering excursions and trails in this area.
At Val di Fassa, there is tourist accommodation available in hotels, farm holiday, farmhouse, residence self-catering accommodation, mountain chalets, b&b, rooms for rent, holiday homes, camp sites and tourist villages.
