According to one tradition, at a moment in which housing tax had become just too high for the farming community, it occurred to one of the farmers to build a house with just one solitary stone to function as the keystone, placed right at the top with a hole in the middle. In this way, upon the visit of the royal inspector, it was possible, with a rope, to pull down the entire building. Another version is that it was the feudal lord who wanted these type of constructions in that, in the case of defaulting payers, it was enough to pull down the keystone and the building would collapse.
So, today, if you happen to be passing through the Itria Valley, at Alberobello or in any case in one of the ten towns which possess a large quantity of these habitations (Martina Franca, Castellana Grotte, Ostuni, Fasano, Cisternino, Gioia del Colle, Locorotondo, Ceglie Messapica, Noci, Putignano) you will be able to admire their conical
shaped roofs, the concentric "chiancarelle" which cover them, their typically Mediterranean appearance and the magical symbols painted upon them. The cone shapes of the trulli, and the "pignon" roofs, create an enchanting landscape. The product of an inventive mind. Today, they are one of the symbols of the Apulia region.
Trulli and Alberobello, there is tourist accommodation available in hotels, farm holiday, farmhouse, residence self-catering accommodation, b&b, rooms for rent, holiday homes, camp sites and tourist villages.
